System Overview.

Mecklenburg EMS Agency (also known as Medic) is the only ambulance service provider in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina serving more than 1.1 million residents across 546 square miles covering urban, suburban, and rural environments. Last year Medic responded to 178,005 calls and transported 121,904 patients.

Structure

Medic is a joint governmental (not private) EMS agency that generates revenue with patient billing and is also subsidized by Mecklenburg County. The agency is governed by an Agency Board of Commissioners, and its budget must be approved by the Board of County Commissioners each year.

Emergency Departments

Medic works in partnership with Atrium Health and Novant Health to respond to a network of 17 emergency departments, including one Level I Trauma Center and one Level II Trauma Center, seven specialized PCI centers, and 8 standalone EDs.

Systems Status Management

Medic utilizes a dynamic System Status Management (SSM) deployment model to position ambulances (both Advanced Live Support and Basic Life Support units). Using real-time data, crews are strategically deployed throughout the county to help maximize coverage.

911 Central Medical Emergency Dispatch (CMED)

Medic has its own secondary Public Safey Answering Point (the only one in North Carolina for medical calls) and is an IAED Accredited Center of Excellence (ACE) – one of only a select number of dispatch centers worldwide to earn this distinction for excellence.

Fire Department Response

Medic works with 14 different fire departments throughout the county for first response to select calls. Our FDs are an essential part of the EMS system, especially during cardiac arrests during which they play a critical role in a highly coordinated, protocol driven CPR approach.
