Cardiac arrest survivor Chuck Sawicki wanted to personally thank Paramedic Crew Chief John Fisher and EMT-B Shelley McAbee for saving his life. On May 17th, 2012 family members arranged a surprise reunion between Mr. Sawicki, the responding firefighters and Medic crew members, Fisher and McAbee.
Mr. Sawicki collapsed in the fitness center at his Uptown Charlotte condo complex on April 9th, 2012. A nurse who was also in the fitness center started CPR while the building manager called 911. Mr. Sawicki’s heart was shocked a total of four times before ROSC (Return of Spontaneous Circulation) was achieved. He says he now knows the importance of learning CPR and how to use an AED. He and his wife have since purchased an AED for their building. The Sawicki’s and their neighbors have also completed a Medic CPR & AED awareness training course so that everyone in the building knows how to properly use an AED and administer CPR.
Mr. Sawicki says he is grateful for the hard work of the Medic crew and their unwillingness to give up when the situation seemed like it would not have a positive outcome.Back to Survivor Stories
