Communications

Medic maintains its own 911 Communication center known as CMED (Central Medical Emergency Dispatch) which holds the distinction of being a Dually Accredited Center of Excellence by the National Academy of Emergency Dispatch in both Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD).

CMED’s primary responsibilities are:

All requests for emergency service are handled via an Enhanced 911 system (E-911). All 911 calls for MEDIC and/or County fire are routed to CMED/Central by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department or two other communications centers (Pineville Police Department and Cornelius Police Department), which serve as the Primary Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) in Mecklenburg County.  

 

All Telecommunicators are nationally certified as Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMD’s) and Emergency Fire Dispatchers (EFD’s). Known as “First First Responders”, CMED is responsible for triaging medical complaints, assessing life threats and providing potentially life-saving instructions and medical care to callers while Paramedics are responding to their location. Typical examples of pre-arrival instructions for Emergency Medical Dispatch include providing information on performing CPR, assisting with childbirth and helping a person who is choking.  Typical examples of pre-arrival instructions for Emergency Fire Dispatch include instructions for assisting with individuals trapped in a building that is on fire or instructions for escape of a sinking vehicle.  

 

Through the use of state-of-the art technology and a highly trained staff, CMED works to ensure our Agency mission is successful.   Efficient use of emergency medical resources is achieved by use of a state-of-the-art Computer Aided Dispatch System, 9-1-1 Telephony Equipment, Medical Priority Dispatch Protocols and Emergency Fire Protocols, and our Regional Radio System.  In addition, the use of global positioning satellite tracking equipment and on-board mobile mapping and data systems enable our Telecommunicators to pinpoint a caller’s location, triage, dispatch appropriate resources and provide medical instructions to our customers.  

 

CMED also utilizes a tool for deployment of resources (System Status Management) which analyzes previous years of data using complex algorithms to help predict when and where the next emergency call is most likely to occur.   The appropriate numbers of resources are deployed based upon demand projections and Communications is responsible for assignments to move units throughout the county to ensure optimal coverage at all times.   The result is a paramedic team that is ready to respond to your emergency, whenever and wherever you need it.  

 

If English is not the caller’s primary language, CMED is able to conference a third party interpreter for any language around the world.   We are also able to connect with the deaf community via Video Relay Services, teletypewriter text telephone (TTY) and Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD).
