MEDIC Celebrates American Heart Month
No one understands better than the employees of Medic, the severity of heart disease and the impact it continues to have on the community. This agency is committed to bringing awareness, education and effective training on heart-related issues to the residences of Mecklenburg County. In recognition of American Heart Month, Medic is providing a series of information that brings attention to and prevention of heart disease...the #1 killer in the United States.
Medic’s focus for American Heart Month 2010 is to:
- Increase awareness on the different types of heart disease
- Educate the citizens of Mecklenburg County on available resources in their area
- Encourage heart disease prevention through heart-healthy eating habits and lifestyle changes
The History of American Heart Month
Heart Month was first established in February 1963 based on a join effort between the American Heart Association and the U.S. Congress which required then-President, John F. Kennedy, to proclaim February as American Heart Month.
Since then, the American Heart Association and the U.S. Congress have continued to work together to ensure that, every year, the President signs a proclaimation recognizing February as American Heart Month.
Why is American Heart Month Important?
Every year millions of Americans die from heart disease. Unfortunately, many people do not think about heart disease until it is too late. The staff at Medic wants to make sure the community has access to the latest information and resources that can save you or a loved one’s life.
